Manila carries a 24 June 1571 identity date, when Miguel López de Legazpi formally established Manila as the Spanish colonial capital and organized its municipal government. The earlier Maynila settlement remains a precolonial layer, while 31 July 1901 marks the incorporation of the modern City of Manila. The 1971 layer is significant as the 400th anniversary of Manila’s formal 1571 organization, not as a verified HUC conversion date.
