Dubai began as a fishing, pearling and trading settlement along Dubai Creek. In 1833, the Al Bu Falasah migration established an independent sheikhdom and began the Al Maktoum dynasty. The year 1833 is the well-documented political foundation date; 9 June remains provisional.
