In 1917, a Snake year, Gandhi led the Champaran campaign, one of the earliest major applications of satyagraha in India and an important turning point in his leadership. The opposite pattern appears three decades later. 1947 was a Pig year, Snake’s direct enemy, and it brought one of the most complicated chapters of Gandhi’s life. India achieved independence, but Partition produced enormous communal violence and displacement. Gandhi opposed Partition, spent Independence Day fasting and praying, and repeatedly intervened in riot torn areas trying to restore peace.
The Pig pressure continued into January 1948, because Lunar New Year had not yet changed the Eastern year. Gandhi began another fast in Delhi on January 13, survived a bomb attack at a prayer meeting on January 20, and was assassinated on January 30, 1948, still inside the Pig year.
