Discover carries two useful CUE timelines. Its original card business emerged in 1985, an Ox year, giving the brand an early imprint of discipline, persistence, and practical financial utility. CUE uses June 30, 2007 for the modern independent company, giving Discover 9 energy, Pig energy, and Cancer influence.
The Pig timing becomes especially interesting later. In 2011, a friendly Cat year, Discover expanded its banking business through the acquisition of substantially all of Allstate Bank’s deposits. Then in 2025, a Snake year and direct enemy to the Pig, Capital One completed its acquisition of Discover. The deal was not a collapse or financial disaster, but it did end Discover’s run as an independent public company and marked a major change in ownership and control.
CUE: Discover shows both sides of timing. Friendly Cat energy appeared around expansion, while its Snake enemy year brought a major structural transition. Enemy years do not always mean failure. They can mark periods when control, ownership, identity, or direction changes dramatically.
