Guadalajara’s identity took its definitive form on February 14, 1542, when the city was formally constituted in the Atemajac Valley after earlier foundations at Nochistlán, Tonalá and Tlacotán. The city had already received a royal city title and coat of arms in 1539, but the 1542 settlement became the enduring urban foundation. From that location Guadalajara developed into an important administrative and religious center, later concentrating education, commerce and civic institutions, and in 1824 became the capital of Jalisco.
